The tubes provide shelter and nesting material to the rats, allowing them to exhibit species-specific behaviors. The change in the animals' behavior has been overwhelming. The rats are much less aggressive; in one year, fight wounds in our cotton rats have decreased by 77%. Instead of fighting, the animals are typically seen resting peacefully with their cage mates in or near their tubes. Technicians can now wear latex gloves during cage changing with no more fear of biting than from other common rodents. Our technicians, veterinarians, and researchers are thrilled with the outcome!
