Horses are sensitive and perceptive animals who should be treated with consideration. Transporting horses on roads can be dangerous and requires safety precautions. Double-deck trailers place horses at risk and are not appropriate for the species. These trailers do not provide the necessary headroom for horses to stand upright, making it hard for them to keep their balance, and subjecting horses to long hours in tight quarters can result in serious injuries. In cities, horses drawing carriages are subjected to pollution, inclement weather, loud noises, and long workdays, all of which can gravely affect their welfare. Learn more about the risks to horses hauled in double-deck trailers or pulling horse-drawn carriages and what AWI is doing to help.
