Jewell, D., Muensch, A., Kupronis, R. et al. 2021. Husbandry techniques for a research colony of veiled chameleons (Chamaeleo calyptratus). Laboratory Animal Science Professional 9(4) (July/August), 52-55.

Although most chameleon species can be challenging captives, C. calyptratus have been successfully kept and bred in captivity for over thirty years. Despite their relative familiarity, our challenge is to replicate their preferred habitats in a practical way while also maintaining the rigorous welfare standards of laboratory animal husbandry. We incorporated the general principles offered in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals when designing our program of management and care, along with current literature on captive care specifically relating to this species. Our Attending Veterinarian actively participates in all husbandry and welfare decisions and regularly performs a walk-through of the reptile rooms. We are an AAALAC International accredited facility, and all studies are approved by the IACUC. The following describes our current solutions in achieving this goal but is not meant to be an all-inclusive description of basic husbandry practices.
