Bayne, K. 1991. Providing environmental enrichment to captive primates. The Compendium North American Edition 13, 1689-1693.

A very useful introduction to the principles of environmental enrichment. A preventive approach to providing for the psychological well-being of captive primates may include the following: (1) the provision of compatible social partners if the species is social in nature and (2) increasing the complexity of the cage environment by nonsocial methods, thereby providing the opportunity to express species-appropriate activity. These methods can also be applied therapeutically for managing animals with behavioral disorders.
