Since opening in 2008, a consistent observation has been that the dogs are significantly quieter and easier to handle in their new surroundings in comparison to the old facility. This may be due to specific design features and working practices, including: 1. Desensitization of dogs to day-to-day noises via better visibility of their surroundings and source of unexpected noise. 2. Increased complexity of environment, including 360 degree view of the dogs' surroundings. 3. Greater staff-dog interaction at a height rather than ground level. 4. Increased staff-dog socialization. 5. Provision of specific exercise areas and cessation of use of central corridors. 6. Change in home pen design from vertical to horizontal bars, increasing the visual field available to the dogs.
