Tully, L. A. 2003. Paint Roller Enrichment. Tech Talk [The Newsletter for Laboratory Animal Science Technicians] 8(3), 1-2.

One of the most common problems we see here is over-grooming. In the past, we used commercially available grooming boards covered with honey and crumbles as treatment. However, grooming boards are time-consuming to assemble and cumbersome on thecages. .. paint roller device, covered in honey and rolled in crumbles like a grooming board, and hung on the outside of the cage with a PVC pipe and clips. .. We gave six of our over-groomers paint rollers and six of them grooming boards. Honey and crumbles were put on both devices. We assessed each monkey's hair loss once a week for 12 weeks and assigned a score from 1 to 10 based on the percentage of hair loss. A scoreof 1 corresponded to 10% hair loss, while a score of 10 corresponded to 100% hair loss. For both devices, two of the six monkeys seemed to improve (their scores decreased), while the others remained about the same. While these are small sample sizes, the data suggest that paint rollers are as effective as grooming boards. .. The paint roller is now our main treatment for over-grooming.
