AWI’s Animals in Laboratories Program works to foster the development and implementation of science-based housing and handling refinements that reduce pain and distress, provide opportunities for species-appropriate mental and physical stimulation, and allow for positive social interaction.
To facilitate the creation of new refinement methods and the implementation of existing refinements, AWI offers two funding opportunities for individuals based in the United States or Canada. There is one funding cycle per year, with proposals due near mid-October of each year.

- The Refinement Research Award provides funds of up to US$15,000 to support the generation and testing of innovative techniques to improve the care, husbandry, and housing of animals in research to improve their welfare.
- The Implementing Refinement Grant provides funds of up to US$8,000 toward the implementation of existing refinement methods through the purchase of equipment or training of staff.
