Biologists who design studies to compare cage sizes should remember that in nature these animals live in a complex arboreal environment .... To determine whether cage size is important, comparisons should be made between macaques in cages and macaques housed in more naturalistic environments. While we do not wish to suggest that Crockett & Bowden's research [1994] is intended to minimize the cost to the research laboratory at the expense of the welfare of primates, such conclusion could, unfortunately, be drawn by those whose interests are simply financial.
