Broom, D. M., Mendl, M. T., Zanella, A. J. 1995. A comparison of the welfare of sows in different housing conditions. Animal Science [Journal of the British Society of Animal Science] 61, 369-385.

The group-housing systems in pens or yards were the most successful, partly attributable to the high social stability of the groups. Oral stereotypies were slightly higher in small groups, perhaps because of smaller pen space, than in larger group but much lower than in stalls. .. There were no clear differences in response to the ACTH challenge tests. Likewise, the measures of immunocompetence showed no differences between the housing conditions. .. Neither was there any clear difference in the haematology, blood biochemistry or in reproductive output.
