Shaping Policy for Farmed Animals

Through engagement with key policymakers at the state, federal, and international levels, AWI seeks an end to cruel methods of housing, handling, transporting, and slaughtering farmed animals. Examples of our work in this area can be found below.

Farmed Animal Fact Sheets

AWI prepares brief fact sheets on a variety of topics related to the use of animals in agriculture.

Farmed Animal Legal Protections

AWI prepares reports on the history and current status of laws that affect the welfare of farmed animals.

Farmed Animal Reports

AWI prepares comprehensive papers on topics related to the welfare of animals used in agriculture.

Comments on Legislation, Rulemaking, and Voluntary Standards

AWI regularly provides public comments, testimony, and similar input to policymakers in furtherance of our mission to reduce animal suffering.

Petitions for Rulemaking and Complaints

AWI submits formal petitions for rulemaking and complaints to federal agencies asking them to use their regulatory power to secure better treatment of farmed animals, and to ensure truthful marketing of animal products.

Requests for Enforcement and Prosecution

When necessary, AWI requests enforcement against or prosecution of parties that violate existing laws or policies. These requests are made at the federal, state, and local level.
