Votes on ending domestic and/or wild horse slaughter:

  • On April 26, 2007 the House of Representatives passed the Rahall-Whitfield wild horse protection act, H.R. 297, by a margin of 277-137.  The Senate has not acted on this measure yet.
  • On August 7, 2006 the House passed H.R. 503, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, amending the Horse Protection Act to prohibit the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human consumption, by a recorded vote of 263-146-1, Roll No. 433.  The Senate failed to act by the end of session to the bill died.
  • On November 11, 2005 President Bush signed H.R. 2744  into law (P.L. 109-97)The amendment to stop horse slaughter for one year is included in this measure.  The ban will begin on March 9, 2006 and last for the remainder of the 2006 fiscal year.
