AWI Goals:
Strict enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act - the major federal statute on protection of animals - is a primary goal of the Animal Welfare Institute.
AWI is opposed to the trade in dogs and cats by random source Class B dealers. These dealers and their suppliers are notorious for their failure to comply with the minimum requirements under the Animal Welfare Act including illegal acquisition of animals.
The Animal Welfare Institute strongly supports the 3 R's:
- Replacement of experimental animals by alternatives
- Refinement of housing, handling and experimental procedures to reduce discomfort, pain, fear, stress and suffering.
- Reduction of numbers of animals used.
