Refinement and Environmental Enrichment for All Animals kept in Laboratories

Viktor and Annie Reinhardt, Animal Welfare Institute

This information resource is a merger of the two databases on refinement & enrichment for non-primate and primate animals kept in laboratories. It disseminates reference material on all aspects of refinement of housing and handling conditions and environmental enrichment for ALL animals kept in research, testing and teaching institutions. Refinement is the attempt to enhance animal welfare and control extraneous variables that may increase research data variability. Environmental enrichment is the provision of stimuli that promote the expression of species-appropriate behavioral and mental activities. This database comprises published articles, abstracts, book chapters, books, photos, and videotapes. Entries have been read/screened and annotated by the authors to guarantee their relevance to the topic.
